Michael Fassbender gets a big head in ‘Frank’ trailer

Frank

Move over animal masks, the latest hipster band accessory is a giant papier-mache head, according to the first trailer for Frank.

Directed by Lenny Abrahamson (What Richard Did) from a screenplay by author Jon Ronson (The Men Who Stare at Goats) and Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Frank stars Michael Fassbender as the title character, a musician who masks his true identity with an oversized bogus head.

Despite his truly odd nature, Frank has a gift for music, and attracts the wannabe songwriter Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) into his web and his highly unusual avant-garde pop band.

The film is said to be loosely based on the life of musician Chris Sievey (whose alter ego was called Frank Sidebottom), who donned a similar papier-mache head for live performances. In the film, Frank takes things a step further, even showering with the head on.

The picture, which also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy, premiered at Sundance and looks to have the right balance of quirkiness and humour.

It arrives in cinemas later this year.
